While basing myself inwards Milan to explore Northern Italy past times train, I’d heard rumors of a foreign Catholic church building hidden away inwards the view of the city, completely decorated amongst human remains.
It’s called San Bernardino alle Ossa, aka “The Bone Church”.
Apparently dorsum inwards the 13th century, a local cemetery flora itself running out of room. Fresh bodies from the nearby infirmary were piling upward — amongst nowhere to bury them.
So officials began to dig upward onetime skeletons, moving them from the cemetery to a modest chamber.
Eventually, a church building was built adjacent to the os room, likely because they felt a fighting guilty.

Italy’s Bone Church
Today San Bernardino alle Ossa has a modest side chapel filled amongst hundreds of these human skulls & other bones from the middle ages.
If you’re curious, y'all tin see the ossuary in addition to run into them for yourself. Like I did.
When y'all walk through the forepart door, await correct in addition to you’ll run into an altar betwixt 2 doors. The left door leads downward a long & nighttime hallway to the os room.
It’s small, merely amongst a high vaulted ceiling painted amongst beautiful frescos past times the creative someone Sebastiano Ricci.
The walls are slightly morbid though. Human skulls & femurs are stacked upward behind wire mesh to shape crosses. They’re attached to pillars in addition to doors inwards all sorts of unlike designs & patterns, completely roofing the room.

Most of the human remains hither are from the flood cemetery or infirmary patients that didn’t arrive (a frequent occurrence inwards the Middle Ages), however, at that topographic point is a exceptional illustration over the dorsum doors total of skulls from criminals who were beheaded for their crimes.
Above the view altar, a statue of the Virgin Mary (or Queen of Heaven) stands encased inwards glass, surrounded past times bones.
